Historical Background
The National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) was established by the Government of Tanzania as a strategic initiative to enhance national connectivity and accelerate socio-economic development through Information and Communication Technology. Launched in phases beginning in 2009, NICTBB was designed to provide high-capacity, reliable, and cost-effective broadband infrastructure across the country.
Over the years, NICTBB has expanded its fiber optic network to connect all regions of Tanzania, linking major cities, government institutions, businesses, and neighboring countries. This expansion has significantly improved communication services, reduced connectivity costs, and supported the growth of key sectors such as education, health, finance, and e-government services.
Today, NICTBB serves as the backbone of Tanzania’s digital transformation, enabling innovation, investment, and inclusive access to information and digital services nationwide.
